Description

High Quality Archival Print.

Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre or Our Lady of Charity in acrylic paint. An image I painted during the pandemic. The troubled waters of worldly life, the struggle, the suffering and the cry like a voice in the wilderness. Under great distress we call out to the infinite, the mystery, the changeless, the One great field of consciousness and in that darkness a response is heard. A response from the Motherly Love behind all love, the Great Comforter, that transcendent peace that dispels all fear, all desire and leaves us in impenetrable contentment.

Much of the imagery here comes from the Patron Saint of Cuba check the story here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Charity

This is a tale of the Americas involving Africans, indigenous west Indians, Europeans, customs of the slave diaspora, conquistadors, Jesuits and pirates. Usually the Mother goddess and child are depicted European, i made them African, the angels also are commonly shown as European, i made them indigenous women of the Americas. Instead of the crucifix commonly in Her hand i gave her the Egyptian Ankh. We sometimes get the impression from history that peoples cultures were isolated from each other but the truth is we have been trading culture for millennia. The Americas is a place where Egypt, West Africa, China, Scandinavians, the Celts and others visited long before Columbus. When Columbus first arrived in present day Costa Rica he saw people staring back at him from the beach. Lets also not forget those who’ve been here 100’s of 1000s years. This art is about the mashup of culture, the struggle of life and the loving hand of the Infinite Mother alive in the whirring of atoms, the laughter of children and the smile of flowers.
